Wonderful post! Strongly agree with “Solve a BIG problem for a FEW folks or a SMALL problem for LOTS of folks”. Would prefer solving an existing problem over offering an unwanted solution.

Vivek – thats the toughest bit. Believe it or not, the most motivated team members came from folks whom I met while I was pitching business to. So, if we met at Tata Sky, technically we should have spotted each other and started working together. SOME folks in stuffy buttoned up collar jobs love a whiff of entrepreneurship and the freedom and will jump ship. They will come ‘bribe’ free.

Also, blog, write, present, go to free conferences (and ask questions), speak and do PR. Lots of the like minded people will connect up with you (again like you did via my blog site).

Hi Alok,

Met you couple years ago while I was doing business development for Tata Sky. Your posts are always insightful. I went thru the painful process of starting and shutting down a business recently and learned whatever you have mentioned above, the hard way. The only thing I would or rather everyone who read your blog would love to understand is – where do I find folks to work with me without bribing them.

One of the biggest reasons I failed because I just couldn’t attract others to join my endeavor. I did sell hard and made money by selling hard but never could crack selling the startup. I still have many ideas but don’t want to start with out the right partner in place. Would love to hear from you on this one point in your future writings.
